En realidad, el proyecto iba a ser conjunto entre Clarke y Kubrick, con el primero como co-guionista. Pero al parecer la presión de Kubrick fue tanta que la idea terminó por concretarse por caminos separados -aunque decididamente complementarios- como relato escrito y película. Clarke aparece acreditado como guionista junto a Kubrick en "2001", la película. Y Kubrick firma junto con Clarke la nota introductoria de la novela. 2001 se basa vagamente en The Sentinel (1951).
